The Search, part 2
I tried out a new color for the chevron scarf. Its this super bright Koigu, shade 822, and looks neon, like antifreeze.
Its paired with the darker green from this scarf's previous incarnation, alternating skeins every 2 rows. You know those wallpaper landscapes from the seventies, where a whole wall would be filled with say, a forest scene?? My grandparents have one of these in their basement. This was my color inspiration.
I am still not really digging on it. This time it seems waaaay too bright to actually wear. and also rather stripey still. The example scarf in Last Minute Knitted Gifts features colors that flow into each other, where the color changes between skeins are indistinguishable.
But maybe I am making up excuses here. Maybe the problem is that I am not down with varigated yarn. Maybe varigated yarn is just not for me, in a scarf at least.
Koigu is definitely for me, though. I've been daydreaming about a solid-color Koigu clapotis in a deep red color. I've heard such a thing would take 3 skeins. I am also toying with the idea of knitting one end in a contrast color, like aqua or lime green.
A fringe benefit of this failed attempt to come up with a chevron scarf?? Lots of leftover koigu. yeaaaah.

Hmm, I see what you're saying about the scarf in the book having almost indestinguishable color transitions. I wonder how their chosen shades looked like in ball form? More highly variegated (larger range of colors in each skein)? Closer in color? This is a tough one! Extra Koigu is always good, though :).

I'm with you on the colors - maybe a bit too different. Extra koigu is awesome - my sister loves the pair of socks I knit with it. The last color was closer, but still not right?? Maybe something in between?

I bet that if you knit the scarf with the colors used in the book, you'd think it was stripe-y, because you'd be watching the different balls and seeing how the rows were so different. Maybe that doesn't make sense. Anyway, I like the greens. You could try using the third ball too.

I really love what you are doing with the two different skeins of Koigu... I think its gorgeous but I understand what you mean about the color stripes. I think the neon one is standing out too much for you (though don't get me wrong, I love it). Maybe try an inbetween green blend from Koigu?? I need to look at that pattern and see what they recommend now that you have me all interested! Have a great weekend..

I agree with Dani; to get the look you seem to want, you probably should be using two shades of Koigu that are more similar than these two are. I don't know how much Koigu your LYS has, but Patternworks.com has a great color card so you can compare all the different possibilities out there.
My best friend in elementary school had one of those foresty wallpaper murals in her dining room; it was more autumnal, though!

You have a fab-dabulous color sense. To me, the bright yellow is balanced by the darker green.

What about pairing it with a koigu that has a similar darkish green as that other skein, but more blue? the blues/navys/aquas may blend alot better than yellow.

I tried to make this scarf and I felt like the two colors I chose were too similar!! But maybe I'll give it another try. I actually really like your scarf colors. I remember my dentist as a child had each room wallpapered in a different theme - the forest wallpaper was my favorite!

First of all, my grandparents HAD one of those forest scenes. I don't think I'd thought about it in a decade, at least. Holy moley. Thanks for taking me back on that score.
I like the scarf. I think that the contrast between the two colors highlights the depth of tones in each one. But Julia could be onto something with the idea of doing a blue-teal color with the darker green.

One thing that I think makes the example scarf deceiving is that the model has darker skin, and she is wearing an orange shirt, so the backgrounds for the scarf blend in with the scarf, making it seem less contrasty and stripey. If you took the example scarf and put it against a white background, it might not look like the two different Koigu colors flow together as well as it appears. And, if you tried placing your scarf against a background that contained the colors in the two different Koigu colorways, it might flow together better. Does that make any sense?

Try a different colourway...more koigu...what's the harm...you can never have enough!

Personally I love it, but then again I'm addicted to green. If Kermit were available and single, I'd divorce my hubby and marry him. Okay not really, Tom selleck on the other hand (insert evil laugh here).
