Hand Socks, a Knitalong and more
Long long ago, my third knit project ever was a pair of fingerless mitts for my friend, Karen. She calls them "hand socks". After a fine season or two of use, through an unfortunate turn of events, one hand sock was lost. Luckily, I had more yarn! (note: one skein of Cascade 220 will make 3 fingerless mitts in the smallest size, with yarn leftover)
The pattern is from . I added a little crochet edging to clean up the garter stitch edge. This is slip stitch crochet done with a hook a couple sizes larger.
I tried it on to make sure it fits. Karen's hands are smaller than mine, so it will actually have more room. I promise I didn't stretch it out!
Get this. My sister, SQ, decided she wanted to learn how to knit a braid cable. Did she consult a pattern book or the internet? nope. She sat down with yarn and needles and *figured it out*. The resulting chart is probably unlike any other cable chart you've seen. Its color-coded!
Since SQ is on cable kick, we've decided to knit Demi together. Would anyone else like to knit along? Guaranteed cabley fun! The pattern is from Rowan Vintage Style (aka "") and calls for an Aran weight yarn (16sts/4" in st st). I'm knitting with Peace Fleece, and SQ is using Harrisville tweed. Leave a comment or drop me an email if you're interested. We plan to start next week, but its casual, you can start anytime in the next couple weeks.

The NY marathon is this Sunday!!! In case you're out watching the race, I'll be number 15823, going at a 10min/mile pace...or faster if all goes well. 26.2 miles, here I come!

Good luck with the race! Have fun, the weather looks like it'll be great.
That's one of my favority sweaters from Vintage Style, I'd like to get to it someday, so I'll be watching your's and SQ's progress closely.

Hi,
I had been reading your blog for a while now. You made beautiful things. This is on my list too and I realise my rowanspun aran would be perfect for it. However I have so many projects in the pipeline (with christmas being so near), I am not sure if I can get started on this. Can't wait to see your version soon though.
Good luck with the marathon!

Good luck with the marathon. The marathon runs two blocks away from our apartment, so we watch it from the sidelines every year. We'll be cheering for you!
Also, looking forward to your progress on Demi. What a beautiful sweater!

Cute fingerless mitts - and I love the color. Your sister is really quite amazing. Brains and creative genius must run in the family. I wish I could be there to wave at you from the sidelines, but I know you'll do great.

Good luck! I know you'll rock it! Demi knitalong sounds fun. If I have stash yarn to pull it off, I might join. Otherwise, I'll be watching from teh sidelines.

I think the mitts turned out great, and there is not a doubt that your friend will love them. How sweet of you to make them for her too :)
I will watch you and your sis knit up Demi with great interest. That is a great pattern.

Firstly, GOOD LUCK in the marathon! I bet you will do so awesome!
Secondly, your sister is killing me with her intarsia and her making up of the cables. I'm feeling so inadequate. She totally rocks. Have fun with your cables!
And very cute hand sock!

Off to see if the Brooklyn library has the pattern book!

Could this be? Not only my first knit along, but also my first aran sweater??? This sounds like as good an excuse as any. Just need to pick up the book. I'm thinking of an ultra cuddly version with some Jaeger Chamonix I've been hoarding. If I can't get gauge, Debbie Bliss Aran Tweed will be at Elann for $4.75 on Tuesday!
Oh, and by the way -- Hi! -- I just found you here thru the link on Fig & Plum. Nice blog you've got here. Good luck with the marathon.

Good luck on your marathon!! I'm wondering if this is your first one...maybe you could mention it next time you post. I ran one a couple years ago! Hardest thing I've ever done, including having my 4 childern, but extremely gratifying! Be proud of yourself, no matter how you do! Again, good luck!

Hey Diana! After your glowing recommendation, I made the fingerless mitts last night and had time to blog them! Fun pattern and I totally love them. I'd be wearing them constantly, except we're having a warm spell here in Cleveland (high 60s). They are like a little hug for your hands.
I color code my cable charts too; they're easier to read. However, I cannot create them from scratch. Your sister's got Mad Cabling Skillz.
Good luck in the marathon!

Wow, good luck with your race. I just started running, using Hal Higdon's approach, and I'm hooked! I'm not sure but I think I run more like a 20 minute mile so I have a loooong way to go, but I plan to keep at it! Your mitts are adorable, thank goodness for having extra yarn (stash is a good thing!).
